IBEN HENDEL PHILIPSEN is a Rebel with A Cause.

I am a villager initiated into words by the wind, anthems and village songs. I grew up in Africa knowing the myth of the rainbow and the rituals of the mist .Never drank from the breath raving scents of urban perfumes .I never swallowed the snow oiled air and never gulped petrol choked wind . I inhaled the freshly bread baked smell of millet beer and the delicious taste of wood smoke .Dawn was always written all over with poems from yelping baboons and rhymes of cooing doves . I am griot. Today , as I hunt literatures in climes beyond the hills of mist .I embraced by the smell of exotic perfumes and the scent of petrol fumes, a festival of stereo songs and glowing stars of metropolitan lampposts .Thank you Denmark , the God of poetry passed through your snow dunes and you birthed the Rebel With a Cause .I grew up loving the rainbow and its colours , I respect all tribes ,literatures and anthropologies .If I see , think or hear Denmark , I remember the story “Hamlet” . I used think that Denmark is some African patch hidden somewhere in the dimples of Europe near Queensland. I marched in that small jungle and met a Rebel with Cause, firm, daring and creative craze Iben Hendel Philipsen. A Danish poet and publisher whose artistry is raw, versatile and mind spinning .Her poetry is self-confessional and is anchored by naked realities and complexities of ragged societal matrixes of rape and sexual violence . Despite the hope purging experiences , Iben remained a resilient fighter , a good dissident against crime , vile and devil hood . She packaged traumatising and violent experiences into a ready to explode poetry grenade EXPOSED. Meet Iben Hendel Philipsen, A Rebel with A Cause. Submissions to WOMAWORDS LITERARY PRESS. Rebel With a Cause

iben 3
is the realization of a dream based on my wish to create a platform that introduces some of the (as yet) unknown, wonderful, multi-facetted and multi-perspectivising literary voices from all over the globe. Voices that present Her- and Histories from a different perspective, from different angles than the ones we are already familiar with. Voices that generate cracks in our Eurocentric perception of the world and introduce new ways of understanding the global world order.
In other words, we wish to publish books that change the way we read the world, literally!
And while we’re aware that literature alone cannot change the world, we are nonetheless firm believers in its ability to enlighten and inspire in ways very little else can.Our primary focus is on stories in translation as it is the most direct way from the global literary stage to a Danish-reading audience. There are so many wonderful stories out there not currently available to those who prefer reading in Danish. And we want to change that. The company was launched in March 2017.

Iben 1

MA in English Literature and founder of the publishing company, Rebel With a Cause as well as translator, editor, author, actor and director

In 2016 Iben wrote a collection of poetry called Exposed (so far only available in Danish) on rape and the consequences of sexualised violence based on her own experience. She then turned it into a theatre production, which has toured schools in Denmark.

She is also the founder of Rebel With a Cause, a small, newly started, independent publisher.“Our raison d’etre is informed by feminist and decolonial thinking and we wish to (re-)present voices and perspectives from outside the (purely) Western gaze. We believe in passing the microphone to people who have been more or less excluded from the narratives and narrating of her- and history in this part of the world. Rebel is a project of solidarity informed by the love of great literature.Currently, we publish translations in order to reach readers of Danish, but we are hoping to expand and possibly provide space for writings in English to be introduced if not published via our website. We are working towards launching a podcast series around our publications in order to prolong and grow the experience of reading beyond ‘the book’.Our publications include fiction, non-fiction and poetry.”
