UNWELCOMED

Corona, stop digging your heels deep
at the junction of our fortitude
fanning our fear from your nostrils
even as you coax to be embraced
by outstretched arms of nonchalance
Flags are raised to our hospitality
but the raging noise of your silence
broke the calabash holding our today
while your hideous facelessness
rush us to mask our vulnerabilities
Bid us farewell now, we beseech you
your fire has roasted the ‘furrah’*
we sacrificed to our hungry ancestors
in your gluttony, you consumed
kolanuts left for welcomed spirits
Corona, leave our farmhouses now
even while the thatch is up in flames
we will run down to our river of hope
to fetch water to put out your memory
forbid not your stench graze in our lungs

“DREAM’
Never cringe in the face of scorn
For a unique being you were born
Your will to live ne’er abandon
The cloak of faith always adorn
Stay constant as the Northern Star
Even in death’s vale, do not fear
That beautiful dream do not spare
Even from woes do not despair
From little foxes mind your vines
Turn life’s grapes into purest wines
Beautiful dreams thrive not on whines
Hard work and faith on success dines
“HOURS IN REVERSE”
My people are a resilient lot, with coping skills to match
Their jocular acumen can make dark days shades lighter
As they churn out sweet mirth from sordid situations
So I send up three cheers of hurray to my compatriots
Who would not crawl into corners of fear and hopelessness
Late into the night, I caressed my quill into a constant spill
Sweetly exchanging silent whispers with my abiding muse
My ears flapped wider to the sounds of dice thrown on glass
I smiled at the back of my neighbours chilling on a game of ludo
Days in lockdown would be long, so we spend them long into nights
As I scribbled, they threw their dice followed by laughter
Late into the night to the wee hours of lockdown day two
Me and my compatriots reversed hours to massacre boredom
I succumbed to sleep, to wake up still to their game of ludo
I was still cajoling my muse when their silence greeted the morn
